Latin name: Corucia zebrata

This individual is a juvenile male.

Other common names include Prehensile-Tailed Skink and Monkey-Tailed Skink.

Solomon Island Skinks are native to the Solomon Islands archipelago off northeast Australia. They are completely arboreal and herbivorous. They are also the worlds largest skink with individuals growing up to 32 inches in length (around half of that length being tail).

A distinctive behavior that sets them apart from other reptiles is their social structure. They typically live in groups consisting of one male and a few females. Together, this group will defend their offspring and secure their territory from other skinks and pretty much any other animal!

Quick care stats:

Temperatures: 85 degrees Fahrenheit on the warm side, 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit on the cool side.

Humidity: 40%-70% Mist 2x daily or have an automatic misting system.

Tank size: 20 gallons for babies/juveniles, 40+ gallons for adults. For adults, the bigger, the better. These skinks are very active and spend a lot of time patrolling their territory.

Tank type: Vertical rectangle.

Lighting: A dimmable heat lamp up to 150  watts will be needed for the basking area . Thermostats are also helpful. Full spectrum UVB lighting is required for this species and should be on 10-12 hours per day.

Substrate and furniture: Soil or bark substrate 1"deep. This skink spends very little time on the ground.

Provide lots of climbing structures and false plants.

A small water dish should  be provided on the tank floor.

Diet and feeding: Offer a variety of dark leafy greens daily. Spring mixes, swiss and rainbow chard, collard, beet and mustard greens, carrot tops and watercress can all be fed freely each day. Tropical fruit such as mangoes, papaya and banana as well as berries can also be offered as occasional treats.

Chop produce to appropriate size for your skink based on their age. They should be able to swallow most pieces whole.

Always remove uneaten produce that has not been consumed after a day.

*All food items must be dusted with both vitamin and calcium powder prior to feeding.*
